Geddes
Trails
The Penetangore River winds its way through the heart of Kincardine,
and with it, the river brings a wilderness that is largely unspoiled
and undiscovered in the middle of town.
There are trails along the river, cow paths worn down by those
who have discovered Kincardine's hidden treasure.
With the development of the Geddes property, that treasure is available
to all people who live and visit Kincardine. This property, about
11 acres, is located at the south edge of Kincardine's downtown
section, along the Penetangore River. The land, mostly flood plain,
plus a feed mill, was purchased by the town several years ago for
$300,000 with the sole intent of developing a nature park and trail
system. Its very development has allowed public access to the existing
cow paths that wind along the river, from one end of town to the
other. In past years, the Geddes property was a feed mill processing
operation since the 1800s. Operation ceased in the mid-'70s. The
property was a popular horseback riding location during the summers.
Organized rides were conducted through the river valleys of the
town from this property. A new walking path under the bridge has
been developed this year, in conjunction with gabion basket repairs
along the Penetangore River. The new walking path attaches to the
Penetangore River path which leads around the river to the Kincardine
lighthouse Eventually plans will include an observation deck and
stairs at the end of Victoria Street.
